ADMISSION TO DOCTORAL STUDIES IN 2012

Vilnius University publishes a competition to doctoral dissertation topics in these research areas (annex 1) in accordance with articles 12, 13, 14, 15, 16 of the 3rd chapter of VU regulations on doctoral studies.

Applicants must have a Master's qualification degree or a higher education degree equivalent to it.

The application with all required enclosures must be mailed via regular (air) mail or by an international courier service. E-mailed or faxed applications or enclosures will not be processed. Applicants have to submit to the Department of Doctoral and Residency Studies the following documents by the 22nd of June, 12.00 hrs:

1. an application addressed to the Rector (an example is published at Vilnius University website);

2. a copy of the passport or any other valid identification card;

3. copies of the Master's diploma or of a higher education diploma equivalent to it and their supplements;

4. Curriculum Vitae;

5. a certificate of assessment of academic qualifications issued by the Centre for Quality Assessment in Higher Education in Lithuania;

6. a completed questionnaire with a photo (published at Vilnius University website);

7. a short description of prospective research project;

8. a list of research works and their copies, conference presentations, works awarded at academic competitions;

9. recommendations by two academic referees from the topic of the relevant field of science;

10. 50 Lt installment check (a form of installment check is published at Vilnius University website).

All the documents have to be written in one of the following languages: English, French, German, Russian or Lithuanian. All translations of all written documents must be validated by the notary.

The Department of Doctoral and Residency Studies presents a list of applicants and calculated their grade point average to Doctoral committees by the 27th of June by e-mail.

On the 29th of June, at 9.00 hrs the applicants take an entrance examination or defend their research project, or have a conversation under the Doctoral committee established procedure. The results are assessed by the 10-point scale.

Research projects must be submitted from the 15th to the 21st of June (inclusive) to Doctoral committees. (Doctoral committees can set their chosen particular dates for the presentation of projects and publicize them on the websites of academic units of the university.)

Doctoral committees determine the requirements for research projects or an examination, or conversation and publicize them on the websites of academic units (indicating exactly when, where ant to whom it must be presented). Doctoral committees can require to submit additional documents which are not provided for in VU regulations on doctoral studies.

In accordance with article 15 of VU regulations on doctoral studies, by the 14th of May Doctoral committees are to present to the Department of Doctoral and Residency studies a panel of examiners for the applicants' entrance examination or project defence in their respective areas of sciences.

Doctoral committees draw a competitive list of applicants to State financed doctoral study positions and to paid doctoral study positions in accordance with articles 15 and 16 of VU regulations on doctoral studies and present it to Rector by the 3rd of July.

The appeals can be filed in to Doctoral committees by the 3rd of July, 12.00 hrs.

Rector's order on the admission to doctoral studies is publicized on the VU website on 4th–5th of July.

International students from countries outside the European Union, admitted to doctoral studies in VU, must pay the stated tuition fees:

The Humanities – 11 090 Lt (≈ 3 214 EUR);

Social Sciences – 12 398 Lt (≈ 3 593 EUR);

Physical Sciences – 17 944 Lt (≈ 5 201 EUR);

Biomedical Sciences – 25 090 Lt (≈ 7 272 EUR);

Technological Sciences – 17 925 Lt (≈ 5 195 EUR).

Doctoral studies begin on the 1st of October.
