Short History
Sociologija. Mintis ir veiksmas (Sociology. Thought and Action) is a peer-reviewed journal devoted to critical writing about change in modern society and culture, and to interdisciplinary research in the social sciences and humanities generally. It was founded in 1997 at Klaipeda University, Lithuania, shortly after being conceived (in 1996) by researchers at the Sociology Department. From its beginnings, faculty members at Vilnius University have been closely involved in work on the journal, including staff from the Department of Social Theory, the Department of Philosophy and the Department of History of Philosophy and Logic. The journal was initially sponsored by the Open Society Foundation as part of its support for the social sciences and humanities in Lithuania. Its title – Sociologija. Mintis ir veiksmas – was discussed and agreed upon in collaboration with the late Prof. Vytautas Kavolis of Dickinson College in the United States, who also set out its long-term intellectual interests and its particular perspective.
