Research in Formulaicity of Contemporary Languages

Sukurta: 19 December 2018
Keywords: Formulaicity, Phrasemes, Recurrent Multi word Expressions, Collocations, Comparative Linguistics, Bilingual Lexicography, Multilingual Lexicography.

Research group focuses on different aspects of formulaic language: multiword expressions, phrases, collocations, lexical bundles and other recurrent units.

Research group activities

The underlying idea is that language exists and therefore can be learned or remembered in units that are larger than words, i.e. in phrases and multiword expressions. Research is corpus-based and relies on our own corpora (e.g., Comparati ve Corpus of Language of Economics, Corpus of BA-Students‘ Thesis) and on other Lithuanian and foreign corpora. The aim of research is to describe various aspects of formulaicity of the Lithuanian language and compare them to other European languages (German, French). The outcome of research encompasses theoretical insights as well as practical products: phrase banks (a Phrase bank of students academic language is under construction), innovative electronic lexicographic works with a special focus on phrasemes (Lidew, Ko-Gloss). The products can be useful for both the first and second language learners as they show a relation between languages as well as the similarities and differences of their phrase structures. Students and interpreters could both profit from these works.

Proposal

  • Constructi on of mono- or multilingual (parallel or comparative) corpora.
  • Corpus-based construction of focused phraseme banks (e.g. usual multi word expressions in company’s internal communication).
  • Construction of monolingual or multi lingual electronic lexicographic tools, participati on or partnership in large international projects focusing on lexicography, phraseology, phrase banks or other.
