Vilnius University Building Lit up in Ukrainian Flag ColoursAs an expression of solidarity with Ukraine and its people, the Vilnius University (VU) building was lit up in the colors of the country's flag. Today, the Ukrainian flag is raised in the yard of the University Library.

The country's leading university emphasizes the friendship between the two nations, the long-standing human connection, the cultural ties, and the struggle of the Ukrainians for freedom.

"Ukraine's flag has changed the flag of the European Union for several days. It is not because we would not believe in the European Union, but because Europe is in Ukraine these days," says Prof. Rimvydas Petrauskas, Rector of VU.

Likewise, the VU administration and various faculties contribute to the culturally close struggle for freedom of the Ukrainian state and its people and express their support by displaying Ukrainian flags in their backyards.

In 2014, Russia annexed the Ukrainian-owned Crimean Peninsula, and it had been fueling a separatist conflict in the eastern parts of the country for eight years, killing more than 14,000 people. Despite diplomatic efforts in recent weeks, tensions in the region are not easing.
