Lithuanian Psychiatrist Dainius Pūras Elected UN Special Rapporteur

Professor Dainius Pūras.On Friday United Nations Human Rights Council elected Dainius Pūras, the Lithuanian psychiatrist from the Faculty of Medicine as the new United Nations Special Rapporteur on the right of everyone to the enjoyment to fit the highest attainable standard of physical and mental health.


The Human Rights Monitoring Institute informed that a Lithuanian representative takes so high position in the United Nations for the first time in history.

Prerogatives of the Special Rapporteur include control of the right to health's situation around the world, states' visits & report on national situation in terms of right to health, communication with states and other concerned parties with regard to alleged cases of violations of the right to health, promotion of the right to health, etc.

Special Rapporteurs are independent human rights experts who have received mandates from the United Nations but no one of the Special Rapporteur receives payment for their work, except for the administrative support from the Secretariat.
