Second Webinar of the “9 months, 9 universities” Series: “Idioms.AI: Where AI Meets the Linguistic Heritage of the Arqus Alliance”
Our talk aims to bring together language and culture enthusiasts within the Arqus Alliance to celebrate the richness of idiomatic expressions. We will utilise generative artificial intelligence to create multimodal content, including text, images and podcasts, and showcase the unique linguistic flavours of our nine member universities. Join our virtual community to explore and share linguistic and cultural diversity through a public podcast channel enriched with AI-generated content that promises to broaden your perspective on language learning in the digital age and strengthen interculturality within our Alliance.
This is the second of the series of guest lectures “9 Months, 9 Universities” to be offered in the framework of the Plurilingual and Intercultural Hub. These lectures focus on specific topics related to language and culture and target mainly graduate and post-graduate students as well as early-stage researchers and academic staff. The lectures are intended to generate awareness and appreciation for the topic of multilingualism as well as an understanding of the many areas of our lives that are related to and influenced by language. The second webinar will take place on 20th November at 13.00 CET.

Meet the speakers
Sílvia Araújo is an assistant professor in the Department of Romance Studies at the University of Minho. Her main research areas include corpus linguistics, language technologies and digital humanities, as well as the implications of these in knowledge construction and communication. As a member of the Center for Innovation and Development in Teaching and Learning (IDEA) at the University of Minho, she is particularly interested in multimodal digital learning environments and the resulting pedagogical practices. She coordinates and participates in funded research projects related to natural language processing and the integration of digital tools in language education. She leads the master’s programme in digital humanities and co-directs the master’s programme in translation and multilingual communication in the School of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences at the University of Minho.
Ângela Ferreira is an artist, curator and researcher born in Porto, Portugal. She holds a doctorate in visual communication with a focus on photopainting and self-representation of indigenous nations from the University of Minho, Portugal. She graduated in curatorial studies and completed her master’s in photography at the Utrecht School of Arts in the Netherlands. Her post-doctoral research was conducted in the School of Fine Arts at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil, where she explored contemporary visual practices that challenge hybrid forms of photography. Over the past decade, Ângela has curated contemporary photography exhibitions across Europe, Asia and Latin American countries, with a special emphasis on Brazil. Ângela is also a consultant for international awards and is a member of the global photography association Oracle, the Curatorial Council of the FotoFestival Solar and the Museum of Photography in Fortaleza, Brazil. She is a guest professor in the School of Architecture, Art, and Design at the University of Minho and Lusofona University in Lisbon. Ângela is also a co-founder of the Nervo_Portuguese Photobook Observatory (2022).
Jérémy Fontes is a professor of French as a foreign language and Portuguese as a foreign language at the University of Minho. With a background in European Languages and Literature and a master’s degree in Portuguese as a foreign language, he is currently conducting research in linguistics at the University of Santiago de Compostela, focusing on the themes of phraseology, phraseodidactics and artificial intelligence. Beyond his academic commitments, Jérémy serves as a legal translator at Braga court. Driven by a passion for the intersection of linguistics and technology, he explores the synergies between these fields.
“9 Months, 9 Universities” is the continuation of the series “Seven Months, Seven Universities”, offered during the first 3 years of the Alliance, when Arqus was formed by 7 universities. It was offered in the framework of the Action Line Multilingual and Multicultural University and focused on specific topics related to language and culture.
