Research Council of Lithuania. Legal Consciousness of Noblemen of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania: Norms and Reality (No. LIT-7-3). Prof. I. Valikonytė. 2013–2015.

The Court Record Book no 264/50 of the Lithuanian Metrica was published in 2014. This book is currently held at the Russian State Archive of Early Acts (Moscow), funds no. 389, archival unit no. 264. The material available in this the Ruler’s Sigismund Augustus court book shows not only the conception of the justice executed by the Ruler, but it also reveals developments of the court processes and legal norms during the preparation of the Second Lithuanian Statute (1566) and the pre-reform justice mechanism during the middle of the XVI century.

In 2014 additional data about the Early Metal Period settlement and burial sites were collected in archives, libraries and museums. Some microregions were surveyed and some sites were photographed and mapped. 50 samples were submitted to Radioisotope Laboratory of Nature research Centre for 14C dating. Distributions maps of burial sites and settlements were prepared. According to the obtained data two catalogues were published: Settlements of the Early Metal Period in Lithuania and Burial sites of the Early Metal Period in Lithuania. Conference  Identity of Early Baltic Society was organised.

In 2014 the three-dimensional analytical model prototype was prepared and tested, the methods of its application were introduced; one article in English was handed in for publication; all the research results were included in the monograph (The Origins of Lithuanian Commonwealth according to the Dubingiai Microregion Research Data), as well as its text and illustrations were prepared and handed in for the publication.

National Research Projects

Research Council of Lithuania. Baltic States between the Third Reich and the Third Rome (No. LIT-14153).  Prof. Z. Butkus. 2014–2015.

During the first year of the project accumulation of essential historical documents, preserved in Archive of the Foreign Policy of the Russian Federation, Russian State Archive of Social and Political History as well as in archives in Berlin, was basically completed. Over 5 thousand of necessary diplomatic documents were copied. The analysis of historiography on the topic of the research was finished. The recent research data was presented in international scientific conference in Riga.

In 2014 the scientific fellowships of the project were working on the analysis of the most recent works of social and history sciences as well as investigated the historical sources preserved in Lithuanian Central State Archive, Kaunas and Šiauliai County archives, “Aušros” Museum in Šiauliai and the library of University of Šiauliai (J. Šliūpas foundation). The documents necessary for the research were copied. The work on the article about the structural changes of the Lithuania society in the third decade of the 20th century was started.

During 2014 the participants of the project T. Balkelis, V. Davoliūtė, K. A. Richter presented their research at the international annual conference of BASEES in Cambridge, United Kingdom. In summer and fall the participants of the project T. Balkelis, A. Streikus and K. A. Richter conducted their research trips to archives and libraries of Vilnius, Berlin, Moscow and Warsaw. The monograph of V. Davoliūtė (The Making and Breaking of Soviet Lithuania) was translated from English into Lithuanian.

National Research Projects

Research Council of Lithuania. Environmental and Social Change and Adaptations in East Siberia: Power Relations and Economy of Luck (No. MIP-12040).  Assoc. Prof. D. Brandišauskas. 2012–2014.

This project produced an ethnographic monograph (D. Brandisauskas. Leaving Footprints in the Taiga: Luck, Rituals and Places among Orochen-Evenki. Oxford, New York: Berghahn Press) and article (D. Brandišauskas. Relying on my own two’: Walking and Subsistence among Orochen Hunters and Herders of South-East Siberia. Mobilities) revealing how social and natural change affected lifestyles of indigenous people in East Siberia. Based on long term fieldwork research, comparative and ethnographic sources this study analysed a shift of economic, political and cultural life of indigenous people over the last few decades. This research investigated vernacular notion of luck that is crucial in understanding indigenous adaptations to the shifting environment and state policies in the period of transition.

During the project the analysis of the 18th century Jewish census is being carried out. At the same time a data base and collective monograph is under preparation. The seminar The Aspects of Social History of East European Jews was carried out. It was devoted to scholars and students of Lithuanian universities and research centres. The seminar was headed by Prof. S. Stampfer from Hebrew Uniersity (Jerusalem, Israel). The first results of the research were presented by Assoc. Prof. Jurgita Verbickiene at international conference Czech-Jewish and Polish-Jewish Studies: (Dis)Similarities.

The results of research were presented at two international scientific conferences: Social Groups and Their Impact on the Development of Society in XVI-XIX Centuries (Vilnius, paper: Reflection of Social Activity in the Merchants Wills in the XIX c.) and Grodno Society: Man in the Space of the City (Grodno, Belarus, paper: Merchant Guilds in the Legislation of the Russian Empire, in 1795-1898 (on the Example of Grodno and Vilnius)).

Rothschild Foundation (Hanadiv) Europe. Developing Jewish Studies in Lithuania: Establishing the Research and Teaching Field in Vilnius University (Grant No. 086/14). Assoc. Prof. J. Verbickienė. 2014–2017.

The main goal of the project is to establish and develop Jewish Studies at the Faculty of History (University of Vilnius). It will focus on expanding and defining subjects of the field, making them more available for students and laying grounds for the future research projects. For example, this project would open ways to promote young researchers research and career progress. These young perspective scholars will have the chance to continue with their training as young lecturers and remain engaged in the field by specializing in the study of history and culture of the East European Jews with a special focus being Grand Duchy of Lithuania and the history of Lithuanian Jewry and its specificities.

RESEARCH INTERESTS

Centre carries out research on the region’s stateless minority cultures (cultures that do not benefit from the moral and material support of a “home country” anywhere): Yiddish, Old Believers, Tatars, Karaimes, Roma and also multicultural studies.
