The focus of this course is communication of social engagement in contemporary theatre. The course aims to introduce students to the main tendencies and aesthetic strategies used in contemporary theatre to increase public awareness and engagement. The course begins with an introductory reflection on the “turns” (performative, participatory, amateur, etc.) in theatre in Western Europe, followed with an overview of theatre practices of the 21st century. The course later follows the general foci of interest of contemporary theatre such as performance and community engagement, eco-concern and sustainability, post-colonialism and migration, corporeality and intermediality among others. Alongside of the survey of theatre developments in the West, the course presents the key features of Lithuanian theatre by comparing the most important Western and Lithuanian theatre productions of the last and current century (“The Cherry Orchard” (dir. Rimas Tuminas), “Hamlet” (dir. Eimuntas Nekroðius), “Shopping and Fucking” (dir. Oskaras Korðunovas), “Crime and Punishment” (dir. Gintaras Varnas) among others. This course aims to be an introduction to the implications of networked digital platforms, connected apps and devices on diverse aspects of contemporary life, communication, and culture. Based on a communication and information studies lens, and taking into account the anticipated impact of generative artificial intelligence on major aspects of our life, culture and identity, it addresses topics such as: the role of online communities and digital platforms in political communication; the effect of networked communication on collective memory and identity; the effects of digital connectivity on romance and relationships; self-expression and creativity in platforms such as Instagram and TikTok; “quantified self” technologies for health self-monitoring; the effect of online media distribution platforms, influencers, and fandom communities; and the rise of crowdsourcing and digital participatory practices in heritage and memory work. This course will aim at examination of an evolving international competition law system. After a brief introduction to some basic concepts in competition law and origins and evolution of international competition law, the discussion will focus on the process of internationalisation of competition law and policy as well as harmonisation and convergence of national competition regimes. The course also includes problems of extraterritoriality and conflicts in the global environment, the relationship between competition and trade policy, issues of cooperation between competition agencies at the international level. |

Annotation: The course covers essential programming concepts and principles that encourage abstraction-based thinking and implements the principle of information hiding, thus facilitating code quality, readability, ease of maintenance and ease of change. During the course, student learns various tools and technologies, and studies object-oriented design patterns that allow to construct standard solutions to typical problems. To take the course, students are expected to already have the fundamentals of programming – the course can be viewed as a natural extension of a course on Procedural Programming Fundamentals taught in previous semester. |

The first lecture will take place on 13 February. The purpose of the course is to introduce the foreign policies of new geopolitical power centres across the globe. A representative list of today’s emerging powers is composed based on geographical-historical (non-Western, i.e. excluding ‘traditional’ powers of Europe, Russia and the United States), economic (membership in the Group of Twenty) and/or military-strategic (possession of nuclear weapons or other substantial hard power resources) criteria. Thus, the cases would include the following states: (I) China as today’s only emerging super-power; (II) Japan, the Koreas, India and Indonesia for the rest of Indo-Pacific Asia; (III) Saudi Arabia, Iran and Turkey for the Middle East; and (IV) South Africa, Brazil and Mexico for the rest of the Global South (Sub-Saharan Africa and Latin America). In each case the principal present-day foreign policy principles, directions and means would be analyzed. Each country-based case-study would be supplemented by theoretical and/or contextual topic related to it. |

Love, sex, and marriage are the elemental units of society, without which there is no society. Yet their interrelationship is much neglected as a subject of study. This course will investigate patterns of love, sex, courtship and marriage from socio-anthropological, evolutionary, and psychological perspectives. While sex is obviously a biological drive its cultural expression varies. Romantic love and marriage (however varied) are also generally considered to be cultural universals and therefore rooted in our biological make-up. Given this assumption, it follows that underlying both the feeling of love and the social practice of enduring parental and parent-child bonds there must also be some sort of universal evolutionary psychological processes at work. |

The main historical focus of the course is on the period following the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, although references to earlier historical periods will be made throughout the course to provide students with the necessary references to understand causes and roots of contemporary politics. |

The aim of this course is to introduce to the origin of next-generation sequencing (NGS) data, principles of their analysis and to provide basic skills for solving different tasks of the NGS, which will allow students to further independently develop their knowledge in specific areas of the NGS. Main topics: sources of big data; RNA-seq: data collection, algorithms, evaluation of results; genome assembly: data collection, algorithms, evaluation of results; genome variations: data processing, algorithms, evaluation of results; Nanopore sequencing: data processing, algorithms, evaluation of results; genome annotation; scRNA-Seq and work pipelines for this type of data; some medical aspects of NGS; verification and assurance of the quality of NGS data; analysis of populations using NGS data. |
Students should be familiar with basic bioinformatics (searching databases, pairwise and multiple sequence alignments) as well as with general statistics. We will use R language and simple bash, so a general understanding of variables, functions and data structures is a prerequisite (knowledge may come from other languages than R/bash).

The main task of Bioethics is to give the main knowledge about bioethics and bioethical problems related to biosciences and to develop and hone the skills of ethical reasoning, for example, the ethical questions raised by assisted reproductive technologies; the management of personal genetic and other forms of bioinformation; considerations about animals use in modern biotechnology (GM animals, cloning), xenotransplantation and etc. Lectures with insertion of discussions (problem-oriented teaching, group discussions, cases analysis) and problem-oriented seminars, active learning (group discussion, finding of consensus using Ethical matrix analysis, multidisciplinary analysis; making of Presentation) are used. Assessment include evaluation of PowerPoint Presentation (25%) and solution of case (25%) study during seminars, and test (50%) with answering to the 20 questions in the written form (assessment graded 10-score grading system according VU Study Assessment Procedure). Objective: to learn the general mechanisms of sensation and perception in visual, auditory, somatosensory and chemical sensory systems. Outcomes. Students will be able to explain: - the signal detection theory basics and its application - the mechanisms of perception of color, space and shape - the basis of movement perception - the mechanisms of pitch perception - the mechanisms of speech percetion - the mechanisms of somatosensory perception - the mechanisms of chemical perception Course unit content. The course is aimed at presenting the knowledge on the mechanisms of sensation and perception processes. How do we relate physical properties of the objects and convert them into perceptual experience? The main functional properties of the visual system are analyzed: thresholds, photopic and scotopic vision, spectral sensitivity, adaptation, visual acuity. The main mechanisms of color, shape, movement, space perception are discussed. The main physical properties of sound and physiological sensation and perception basics are presented: pitch, timbre, sound localization, speech. The main functional properties of touch, pain, temperature, taste and smell are discussed. During the course laboratory works corresponding to mechanisms in each sensory system are planned.
