As a form of mass media, advertising mirrors society, reflecting our cultural ideas, desires, and aspirations. But mirrors can be built to distort, reinforcing a version of reality that magnifies some, while diminishing others. This talk argues that advertising is not a neutral medium that occasionally produces racist content; it is a system built within an ideological context that functions to produce, maintain, and naturalize racial hierarchy. The question then is not simply whether modern-day brands can or should be more "inclusive," but rather whether the fundamental logic of mass communication can be decoupled from enforcing and reproducing racial difference in contemporary media.
