- During the first two months of the doctoral studies, the doctoral student must prepare an individual work plan in consultation with the supervisor.
- Study subjects can be chosen from doctoral studies in all fields of science.
- The work plan must be approved by the Doctoral Committee.
- The work plan can be changed during the doctoral studies. In this case, the changes must be agreed with the supervisor and submitted to the Doctoral Committee.
Important:
- Before taking the exam, it is necessary to contact the lecturer supervising the respective study subject (it is indicated in the description of the study subject) and agree on the date of the exam.
- After agreeing on the date of the exam, the doctoral student applies to the doctoral administrator of his / her field of study, who should arrange for the order of the head of the department to be prepared.
- The order is prepared in the department where the lecturer supervising the study subject works.
- Due to the circumstances, failure to pass the examination in time may delay the term of the examination by the decision of the Doctoral Committee.
- At the end of each year of doctoral studies, the doctoral student reports to the Doctoral Committee on the implementation of the work plan in accordance with the procedure established by it. Doctoral students funded by the EU Structural Funds report twice a year.
- The Doctoral Committee makes a decision on the certification. The decision can be: to certify, to postpone the certification for a set term, not to certify.
- An uncertified doctoral student is expelled from doctoral studies. A doctoral student who has studied in a state-funded place will have to return the funds (70 basic social benefit amounts) to the state budget.
- Those who report for the last year of doctoral studies must submit a dissertation manuscript to the Doctoral Committee. Doctoral students who have studied in a state-funded place without fulfilling this requirement will be required to return the funds (70 basic social benefit amounts) to the state budget. - Trainings for general skills development organized by VU Department of Science and Innovation are published on the website(https://www.vu.lt/en/studies/phd-students/trainings).
- Doctoral students can choose general skills development activities not only in VU but also in other Lithuanian or foreign institutions.
- Credits collected for general skills development activities must be approved by the Doctoral Committee.
- Each Doctoral Committee should establish a procedure for the crediting of general skills credits.
- When planning a trip, the doctoral student should consult with the supervisor and take into account the recommendations to choose which conference, internship or event to go.
- In case of questions about the reimbursement of travel expenses, he can consult the person in charge of the unit's finances.
- Before leaving the doctoral student must fill in a request and submit it to the Doctoral and Postdoctoral Department.
- The doctoral student may leave only when the order of the Rector or his / her authorized person has been prepared and signed.
- After returning from the trip the actual expenses incurred during the trip must be reported to the VU Finance Department on the actual expenses incurred during the trip.
- A doctoral student is granted academic leave for important reasons (childbirth, parental leave, doctoral student's illness, etc.) upon submission of a request and documents substantiating the reason for the leave.
- Academic leave for personal reasons is granted to a doctoral student for a maximum period of one year during all doctoral studies. It is then sufficient to submit a request (no supporting documents are required).
- The request for academic leave must be endorsed by the supervisor and the chair of the Doctoral Committee or head of unit.
- The completed and signed request must be submitted to the Doctoral and Postdoctoral Department.
- Before returning from academic leave, a request for reimbursement must be submitted to the Doctoral and Postdoctoral Department. A person who does not return from academic leave for 15 days without a valid reason shall be expelled from the doctoral studies.
- A doctoral student who is on academic leave due to illness, on the recommendation of a doctor or doctors' advisory commission, on maternity or parental leave and notifies the research and study institution in writing before the expiration of the academic leave is exempted from returning.
- The doctoral student must present the prepared dissertation at the meeting of the department in the presence of the doctoral student's supervisor. During the hearing, it is decided whether the dissertation can be submitted for further defense procedures and the minutes of the meeting are drawn up. To organize the discussion of the dissertation and to prepare the minutes of the meeting, contact the administrator of doctoral studies.
- The dissertation considered in the department is submitted to the Doctoral Committee, which appoints the reviewers, determines the date of the defense and the composition of the defense council. The decision of the committee shall be recorded in the minutes of the meeting.
- The protocol of the Doctoral Committee's dissertation consideration and other documents required for the defense of the dissertation shall be submitted to the Doctoral and Postdoctoral Department at least 1.5 months before the planned defense. Find more information below.
- Students are paid a scholarship of the amount established by the resolution of the Government of the Republic of Lithuania from the state budget.
- In order for the scholarship to be transferred to the doctoral student, it is necessary to register your bank account by logging in to VUSIS.
- Every doctoral student for research, trips, etc. can use the funds of the Doctoral Fund. More information is over here.
- Doctoral students use the funds of the Doctoral Fund and pay for them in accordance with the procedure established by the head of the department where they are studying.
- Doctoral students studying at a non-state funded doctoral place pay for their studies in accordance with the procedure established in the doctoral study agreement.

A person who seeks to acquire a Doctor of Science degree externally must provide these documents to Vilnius University Doctoral and Posdoctoral Office by e-mail :
1. Request to considerate a permission to let defend a doctoral dissertation externally in PDF and ,,Microsoft Word“ (DOCX) formats (example of the request here);
2. Manuscript of the dissertation or an issued scientific monograph (in PDF format);
3. Candidate‘s list of scientific publications about the main results of the dissertation and their copies in PDF format (in one file);
4. A list of scientific events at which the main results of the dissertation have been published;
5. A Master‘s Degree (or equivalent qualification) diploma and it‘s supplements in PDF format;
6. The description of the candidate’s life, scientific and creative activity – curriculum vitae (in PDF format);
7. Approved copies of the minutes of doctoral examinations (if any) in PDF format.

State-funded PhD students receive a scholarship, the amount of which is regulated by the Government of the Republic of Lithuania's Resolution "On the Implementation of the Law of the Republic of Lithuania on Science and Studies".
The amount of the scholarship is as follows:
1. for doctoral students in the first year of their doctoral studies - 19.0 BSA*;
2. for doctoral students in the second and subsequent years of their doctoral studies - 22.0 BSA*.
*BSA - basic social allowance. From 1 June 2022, the BSA is 46 EUR.
The Lithuanian Research Council allocates funding annually under two types of grants:
- Grants for outstanding study results. The aim of the grant is to support doctoral students who are studying productively, the amount of the support is not more than 96 basic social allowance per year.
The call for proposals is open annually from 15 October to 15 December.
- Support for academic trips. The aim of the grant is to enable doctoral students to improve their scientific qualifications by participating in events abroad, to increase the international mobility of doctoral students, and to support the international dissemination of Lithuanian research results. The amount of the support shall not exceed 30 basic social allowances; no more than one grant per doctoral student per year shall be allocated for a single research trip.
The call is launched twice each year: from 15 October to 15 November for the first half of the following year and from 15 April to 15 May for the second half of the same year.

The third Arqus PhD Week took place in Granada on May 9 and 12 to discuss career opportunities outside academia. 30 PhD students and career development experts from nine universities in the Arqus Alliance gathered to explore new professional fields. Over four days, a wide range of training sessions were held, with 10 international career development experts addressing relevant topics such as the skills and competences needed for employment in the private sector, project development, open innovation, career development in knowledge transfer and more.
Doctoral students from Vilnius University also participated in the third Arqus Doctoral Week and agreed to share their impressions:

The PhD Week is developed in the framework of the Arqus PhD Pursuit, the Alliance’s initiative that stands for bridging research and education to prepare early-stage researchers for existing and emerging grand societal challenges by enhancing their international competitiveness inside and outside academia and contributing to regional and European innovation strategies.

A competition for the position of a postdoctoral trainee at the Institute of Asian and Transcultural Studies of Vilnius University (VU) is announced. Applications are accepted until 1 March 2023.
The two-year postdoc fellowship project will explore transformations in romantic love, marriage and gender relations in South Korean society. The research will be carried out under the supervision of Prof. Dr Victor de Munck and in close interaction with other members of his group.
This project will aim to understand the changing conceptions and practices of intimate relations among South Korean youth as they are an integral part of a larger process of societal transformation. The research will use a holistic approach to describe and analyze changes in perceptions of love, marriage, and gender relations in contemporary South Korea through considering the dynamics between cultural, economic and linguistic aspects of South Korean life.
The research will also investigate how these changes are influenced by the historically constituted norms and practices of gender relations, as well as contemporary gender images circulating in the media. More materially, the research will take into account economic factors affecting intimate relations and will research how these changes are reflected in linguistic practices.
Applicants may submit comparative research projects that would focus not only on South Korea but also other regions.
The project will be conducted at the Institute of Asian and Transcultural Studies.
Budget: Staff cost: full-time work position – 2 152 Eur/per month (all taxes included); 24 months x 2 152 Eur., at all 51 648 Eur. Cost amount for project activities implementation – up to 10 000 Eur.

• PhD in Social Sciences or Humanities, preferably in the field of Sociocultural Anthropology;
• Experience in doing fieldwork in South Korea (advantage);

The duration of doctoral studies depends on the form of doctoral studies chosen: full-time doctoral studies last up to four years and part-time doctoral studies last up to six years.
There are no external studies. The only way to obtain a PhD is by external study - by independently preparing a doctoral thesis (a published scientific monograph can be submitted as a thesis) and passing the doctoral examinations.
You can also send your leave application by email. It is important that it is completed and signed in full.
A signed application for return to study must be delivered to the Doctoral and Postdoctoral Office before returning from academic leave. Failure to submit this request may result in the doctoral student being withdrawn from the course.
