HELP Initiative

HELP Initiative

Be attentive - notice and respond to the emotional state of other community members. HELP is an acronym that outlines an action plan for providing psychological first aid to another person.

Notice

Often, we can notice changes in another person's behavior, thinking, or emotions. This can manifest as mood changes, withdrawal from social contacts, or disrupted sleep and appetite. We may also notice altered thinking or difficulties managing daily tasks.

Ask Openly

Upon noticing changes, we can share our observations and ask how the person is feeling. Start with facts, express your feelings, and ask a question. For example, “I noticed you’ve been mentioning poor sleep and missed 2 meetings with classmates. I’m concerned because it seems something is happening in your life. How are you?”

Listen Carefully

After asking a question, just listen attentively. Avoid giving advice or contradicting what is said. Simply let the person speak. Show you are listening by saying “Mhm,” “I hear you,” etc., or sometimes, eye contact and being present is enough.

Offer Emotional Support

Being there for someone as they share their burdens without rushing to find solutions can be the best way to offer emotional support. Hearing the person’s emotions and feelings, we can acknowledge them, e.g., “I can only imagine how difficult that was,” “I understand that receiving a poor grade was upsetting,” etc.

Seek Solutions Together

Sometimes a sincere conversation is enough, but sometimes further help is needed. In such cases, we can directly ask, “How can I help you in this situation?” or share who can provide the necessary assistance.
