Arqus Webinar to Examine Sustainable Approaches to Multilingual Education

The next webinar in the Arqus “9 Months, 9 Universities” series will focus on cross-linguistic mediation as a sustainable translanguaging practice in Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) and minority language education. Organised within the framework of the Arqus Plurilingual and Intercultural Hub, the online session, titled “Is There a More Nutritious Approach? Cross-Linguistic Mediation as Sustainable Translanguaging Practice for CLIL and Minority Language Education”, will take place on 18 May 2026 at 10:00 CEST.

The webinar will examine the challenges of integrating translanguaging practices in minority language and CLIL educational settings. It will address the balance between drawing on learners’ full linguistic repertoires and safeguarding the vitality of minority languages, such as Irish.

The session will also consider the role of dominant languages, particularly English, exploring how they can support learning while also potentially creating challenges in minority language contexts.

Drawing on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, the talk will introduce cross-linguistic mediation as a possible way to approach these issues. It will explore whether a more structured understanding of translanguaging can help support effective learning while contributing to long-term language sustainability.
