The University of Granada to host international PhD Summer School in Translation Studies

The University of Granada will host the Doctoral and Teacher-Training Translation Studies Summer School from 15 to 26 June 2026, bringing together doctoral researchers and educators in Translation Studies from around the world.
The summer school is part of an international initiative jointly organised by five universities: the University of Ljubljana (Slovenia), the University of Turku (Finland), Tampere University (Finland), the University of Granada (Spain), and Boğaziçi University (Türkiye). Since its establishment in 2012, the programme has welcomed doctoral candidates and translation and interpreting teachers from a wide range of countries, creating a dynamic platform for advanced training and academic exchange in the field of Translation Studies.
The 2026 edition in Granada is titled “Ibn Tibbon”, in honour of the medieval translator, philosopher and physician Judah ben Saul Ibn Tibbon, who was born in Granada and is known for translating philosophical and ethical works from Arabic into Hebrew.
A focus on the political dimensions of translation
The theme of this year’s edition, “The political stakes of translation, interpreting and interdisciplinarity in times of global crisis”, reflects the growing importance of translation in addressing contemporary global challenges. Through lectures, seminars and discussions, the programme will examine the role of translation and interpreting in contexts shaped by geopolitical tensions, social movements and technological transformation.
Participants will explore how translation mediates knowledge across cultures, disciplines and communities, and how it can both reinforce and challenge existing power structures. The programme encourages critical reflection on the ethical, political and social dimensions of translation in an increasingly complex and interconnected world.
The guest professor for the 2026 edition will be Julie Boéri, Honorary Research Fellow in Intercultural Communication, Translation and Interpreting at the University of Manchester and President of the International Association of Translation and Intercultural Studies. Her research focuses on the translational dynamics of socio-political and technological change, as well as the ethics of mediation in activist, professional and academic contexts.
Advanced training and research exchange
The summer school combines lectures, methodological discussions and collaborative activities designed to support early-stage researchers and educators in translation. Participants will engage with current theoretical and methodological approaches in Translation Studies and will have the opportunity to present and discuss their research projects in an international academic environment.
By bringing together scholars, doctoral candidates and educators, the programme aims to foster interdisciplinary dialogue and strengthen international collaboration in translation and interpreting research.
