The Council of Vilnius University is a collegial decision-making body that ensures the autonomy of the University and the self-governance of the community. The Council ensures that the University's activities are in line with its mission, long-term goals, and academic principles, and that they guarantee openness, accountability to society, and high quality. Together with the Senate and the Rector, the Council oversees strategic development, the protection of academic interests, and public disclosure requirements.
The Council is elected for a five-year term and consists of 11 members: five representatives from the University’s academic staff, four external (non-University) members, and two student representatives (one of whom is an external member). The current Vilnius University Council took the oath of office on 17 December 2024.

Rules of Procedure
The regulations establish the procedure for organizing the Council's activities: the exercise of powers, the frequency and procedure for convening meetings, the procedures for considering issues and adopting resolutions, the rights and duties of Council members and the chairperson, as well as other aspects of the organization of the Council's work.
