Įžanga. Emocinės gerovės kūrimas – yra viena svarbiausių VU vertybių. Siekiant, kad ši vertybė taptų ir kiekvieno VU bendruomenės nario asmenine vertybe sukūrėme mokymo programą doktorantūros studentams. Ši mokymo programa – tai psichinės sveikatos gerinimo bei naujų kompetencijų ugdymo priemonė. Ji skirta gilesniam savęs bei emocijų pasaulio pažinimui, psichinės sveikatos stiprinimui, efektyvaus ir lygiateisio bendravimo kompetencijų plėtojimui, konfliktų ir perdegimo prevencijai. Psichinė sveikata – tai emocinė ir dvasinė būsena, kuomet žmogus leidžia sau džiaugtis gyvenimu, patiria pilnatvės jausmą, taip pat moka išgyventi ir liūdesį, skausmą. Gerai jausdamasis pats, geba priimti kitus ir leidžia kitiems būti savimi. Gera psichinė sveikata tai nėra tik psichikos sveikatos sutrikimų nebuvimas. Žmogaus emocinės gerovės ir sveikatos rodikliai – gebėjimas užmegzti bei palaikyti sveikus asmeninius santykius, mokėjimas įveikti sunkumus, atsakingas sprendimų priėmimas, galimybė išreikšti save.

Programos esmė – motyvuoti doktorantūros studentai dalyvauja mokymuose, kurių metu įgyja psichologinių žinių, vysto kompetencijas, kurias vėliau pritaiko kurdami gerą psichologinį klimatą artimiausioje socialinėje aplinkoje, efektyviai komunikuoja su dėstytojais, studentais, kolegomis, šeimos nariais, gerai jaučiasi, siekia savo gyvenimo tikslų įgyvendinimo.

Mokymo programos tikslas – suteikti doktorantūros studentams žinių apie emocinę sveikatą, jos stiprinimą, mokytis įveikti stresą, užkirsti kelią perdegimo sindromo atsiradimui, įsisavinti konstruktyvius ir nediskriminuojančius reagavimo būdus, patekus į konfliktinę ar kitą probleminę situaciją.

Mokymo programos uždaviniai:

• Suteikti doktorantams žinių apie emocinę gerovę, vystyti jų kompetencijas, reikalingas palaikyti gerą savijautą, efektyviai tvarkytis su kylančiais iššūkiais.
• Vystyti emocinį intelektą, reikalingą pedagoginiame darbe.
• Mokyti doktorantus pasirūpinti emocine sveikata,
• Skatinti doktorantus rinktis efektyvius ir priimančius kitą bendravimo būdus, palaikyti sveikus tarpusavio santykius, konstruktyviai spręsti kylančius konfliktus.
• Išmokti efektyvių streso įveikos būdų, mažinti perdegimo atvejų, konfliktinių situacijų pasireiškimą.
   

Mokymo dalyviai įgis profesiniam augimui svarbias kompetencijas:

Emocijų valdymo, stresų įveikimo, konstruktyvaus konfliktų sprendimo, lygiaverčio bendravimo ir bendradarbiavimo kompetencijas, padedančias užmegzti ir palaikyti ryšius.

Before writing a research paper it is necessary to familiarise oneself with the concept of scientific discourse. To be able to produce effective research papers it is important to understand the logic and structure of a research paper and know what to write in every part of every section. We will analyze different types of articles, and work out a useful template to follow and apply to your own research paper. We will look into the English expressions that experienced writers use to write clearly and concisely

TOPIC 2. DRAFTING AN INTRODUCTORY PART OF THE PAPER

The introduction is an important part of a research paper as it should answer the questions: what, why, and how.  It is meant to set the context for your research work and highlight how it contributes to the knowledge in your field and builds on previous similar studies. We will analyse and discuss a four-step model of how to write an introduction and perform a practical task by applying the model to your planned research paper.

TOPIC 3. RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

Research methodology is an important part of a paper. It should explain your methodological approach, include information about the methods you used to do your research. It should also explain what you did and how you did it, by allowing the readers to assess the reliability and the validity of your research. We will overview the main issues that you have to include in this part: the type of research that you did, how you collected and analysed the data, tools and/or materials you used for your research, and describe the rationale for choosing the research methods. We will look into the academic style, grammar, and vocabulary to be used to express your ideas appropriately.

Legal Regulation of using AI at Vilnius University. The use of AI tools for academic writing.
The concept of plagiarism, the degrees of plagiarism and the necessary techniques to avoid it will be discussed followed by practical tasks of using acceptable ways of acknowledging sources, making references, and using quotations.

In academic writing, summarising is a crucial skill which enables the writer to condense long literature sources into a concise form. In this seminar, the most commonly used stages of writing summaries will be discussed and writing a summary of a short article will be practiced.

We will follow a four-step model of writing a methodology part and familiarise ourselves with the practical tips for writing a good methodology part.

We will analyse examples and practice writing these parts as well. We will also overview the guidelines of research proposal writing and perform practical tasks.

There is no one correct style of academic writing as every researcher should find their own voice. In the seminar, guidelines for an appropriate style of writing will be provided and tasks aimed at objective, accurate and impersonal writing will be practiced.

AI tools for creating different types of visuals used for describing empirical findings will be analysed. Individual cases prepared by seminar participants will be presented and discussed.

Description

This four-part online course explores how researchers can leverage the latest capabilities of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) to enhance their scholarly work. It is primarily tailored for doctoral students but will also be beneficial to anyone engaged in academic research, including established scholars and Master's students. The objective of the course is to develop foundational knowledge and awareness of current developments concerning GenAI's logic, capabilities and limitations, as well as the ethical and practical considerations and techniques associated with its use. Participants will receive practical guidance for integrating GenAI tools throughout various stages of their own research.

Session 1: Understanding and Using Generative AI Ethically in Research. This session will introduce the logic of generative AI and will explore the capabilities and implications of the latest generation of AI tools for academic research. It will also address the ethical considerations of using GenAI in research, including plagiarism, data fabrication, authorship, transparency, and reproducibility.

Session 2: Conducting a Literature Review with AI. Participants will learn how to leverage GenAI to identify key themes in existing research and streamline the literature review process. This includes searching for relevant literature, summarising and critically assessing key findings, and identifying a research gap. The session will address different types of literature reviews and the appropriateness of GenAI in each context.

Session 3: Using AI to Interact with Research Data and Sources. This session will focus on the application of GenAI in analysing and interacting with research data, with a particular emphasis on qualitative research. Topics will cover AI-assisted data exploration, pattern recognition, summarisation, and interpretation. The session will address potential biases that may emerge, underscoring the importance of human oversight in managing the generation of GenAI outputs and validating results.

Session 4: Enhancing Research Writing and Scholarly Communication through AI. Participants will learn how to utilise GenAI to identify shortcomings in a research manuscript and receive developmental editorial feedback to improve the text, format references, and create summaries for scholarly communication. They will also be introduced to GenAI tools for generating diagrams and visualisations. The session will examine current publisher guidelines regarding the use of AI in academic writing and will address the ethical implications related to authorship and plagiarism concerning AI-generated content.

Instructor

Costis Dallas is Professor and Head of the Department of Digital Cultures and Communication at the Faculty of Communication, Vilnius University. His research focuses on digital research methods in the human sciences, digital curation in the wild, the role of digital infrastructures in archaeological and humanities research, and heritage, memory, and identity practices on social media. He published over 50 peer-reviewed articles in journals and conference proceedings and co-edited Cultural Heritage Infrastructures in Digital Humanities (Routledge, 2017). His latest, co-authored peer-reviewed publications include “The Message Is the Agent: Nexus and Semiosphere in Social Media Communication”, “Difficult Heritage on Social Network Sites: An Integrative Review”, “An Ontology of Semiotic Activity and Epistemic Figuration of Heritage, Memory and Identity Practices on Social Network Sites’”, and “Battle or Ballet? Metaphors Archaeological Facebook Administrators Live By”. He holds a BA in History from the University of Ioannina, Greece, as well as MPhil and DPhil degrees from the University of Oxford and is an Emeritus Associate Professor at the Faculty of Information, University of Toronto.

Course focus:

The focus of this course is on research writing and publication practices in English. It is notoriously difficult for researchers who are non-native speakers of English to get their research published in international journals. This is partly due to significant rhetorical differences of academic text construction followed by Anglo-American writing traditions in comparison to many other academic cultures, as well as specific expectations of international journal boards. Another challenge for novice researchers is to adapt their writing patterns to match the epistemological writing traditions of their discipline, so that their writing is recognized as that of the ‘insiders’ of the field. Recognizing rhetorical patterns that characterize a discipline is therefore a cucial step in mastering effective research writing. Finally, novice researchers at the PhD level frequently find it difficult to respond to peer review and to act as peer reviewers themselves. All of these issues will be addressed in the course. The course will also give an opportunity to participants to share their own writing and receive feedback both from peers and from the course instructor.

About the lecturer:

Dr. Jolanta Šinkūnienė is professor of English linguistics at the department of English Philology and a director of English, Romance and Classical Studies Institute at Vilnius University. She is a member of the expert committee of the humanities and social sciences at the Research Council of Lithuania and a co-chair of Research Culture Working Group at Science Europe. Her research interests focus on cross-linguistic, cross-disciplinary and cross-generic studies of academic discourse, EAP (English for Academic Purposes), research publication and reviewing processes, evaluation of research, effective scientific discourse construction, academic identity and career aspects. Jolanta is a reviewer for a number of international journals, she is also a member of international advisory board of journals Iperstoria, Discourse and Interaction, and a member of the editorial board of ESP Today.
