13 Vilnius University Students Awarded Presidential Scholarships

51482383392 0e500e0a7e cThe 28 best students in the country have been awarded Presidential Scholarships for the 2022-2023 academic year, in recognition of their excellent academic achievements in various fields of study. This year, 13 scholarships – the highest number ever – were awarded to students from Vilnius University (VU).

These scholarships, which were established in honour of the Republic of Lithuania’s Presidents Antanas Smetona, Aleksandras Stulginskis, Kazys Grinius, Jonas Žemaitis and Algirdas Brazauskas, are awarded to the country’s best students every year.

Candidates for the scholarships are selected based on their academic achievements, as well as their scientific, social and artistic activities. The students are evaluated for achieving exceptionally high study results, in addition to participating in competitions, expeditions and student scientific practice projects, contributing to published research papers, etc.

The students receiving scholarships are currently studying in Bachelor’s, Master’s and integrated study programmes at eleven higher education institutions throughout the country, including eight universities and three colleges.

Thirteen students from VU will receive scholarships

This year, a total of thirteen VU students will receive Presidential scholarships. The Antanas Smetona (Social Sciences study group) scholarships were awarded to Gabrielė Aputytė, a fourth-year student in the Lithuanian Philology and Latvian Language Bachelor’s study programme, and Mikas Danilevičius, a third-year student in the Classical (Latin and Ancient Greek) Philology Bachelor’s study programme, both from the VU Faculty of Philology, as well as Pranciškus Gricius, a first-year student in the Philosophy Master’s study programme at the VU Faculty of Philosophy.

The Alexandras Stulginskis (Mathematical Sciences, Informatics Sciences and Physical Sciences study groups) scholarships were awarded to Ieva Pudžiuvelytė, a third-year Bachelor’s degree student of Bioinformatics at the VU Faculty of Mathematics and Informatics, Diana Griesiūtė, a first-year student in the Chemistry Master’s study programme at the VU Faculty of Chemistry and Geosciences, and Vilius Bagdonas, a first-year Theoretical Physics and Astrophysics Master’s student at the VU Faculty of Physics.

Lukas Krasauskas, a first-year student in the Molecular Biotechnology Master’s study programme at the VU Life Sciences Centre, as well as Mohammad Nour Alsamsam, a first-year Master’s student of Photonics and Nanotechnology at the VU Faculty of Physics, will receive the Jonas Žemaitis (Engineering Sciences and Technology Sciences study groups) scholarships.

The Kazys Grinius (Life Sciences, Health Sciences Veterinary Science, Agricultural Science and Sports study groups) scholarships were awarded to Giedrė Žulpaitė, a fifth-year student in the Integrated Medical study programme provided by the VU Faculty of Medicine, and Justina Gineitytė, who is in her fifth year of studies in the Biophysics Master’s programme at the VU Life Sciences Centre.

Finally, the Algirdas Brazauskas scholarships (for the Social Sciences Educational Sciences, Legal, Business and Public Management study groups) were awarded to Dominykas Ragelis, a third-year Psychology Bachelor’s degree student at the VU Faculty of Philosophy, Danielius Jurčikukonis, a first-year Master’s student in the Geography and Territorial Planning study programme from the VU Faculty of Chemistry and Geosciences, and Vilius Lapas, a first-year student in the Criminal Justice Master’s study programme from the VU Faculty of Law.

Three scholarships will also go to students enrolled at the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre, while two each will go to the Kaunas University of Technology and Vilnius Gediminas University of Technology, and one to students at each of the University of Health Sciences, Vytautas Magnus University, Klaipėda University and Vilnius Academy of Arts. The Presidential scholarships were also awarded to two students from the Kaunas University of Applied Sciences, and one to each of the Vilnius and Šiauliai University of Applied Sciences.

Nine students were awarded Presidential Scholarships for their achievements in Social Sciences and the Arts. The top five students were selected from the Life, Health, Veterinary and Agricultural Sciences and Sports study groups. Another five students are enrolled in Engineering and Technology Sciences, as well as five students from the Social and Educational sciences, Law, Business and Public Management study groups. In addition, four students were awarded scholarships for top results in programmes in Mathematics, Computer Science and Physical Sciences.

Up to 30 Presidential Scholarships are provided to the best students every year. Students from all higher education institutions, who are studying in both state-funded and non-funded programmes, can apply for the scholarships. Applications for the scholarships are submitted by higher education institutions and are evaluated by experts from the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences.

The Presidential Scholarships were established in 1995, in order to honour the Presidents of the Republic of Lithuania and to encourage the country’s best students in their ongoing studies.
