Awarding degrees of doctor honoris causa

Article illustrationOn May 18 at 15.00 the celebratory ceremony of the University Senate will take place at the University Church of St. Johns'. This ceremony is convened to award degrees of doctor honoris causa to professor IMRE KÁTAI (Budapest Eötvös Loránd University, Hungary) and to professor ANDRES METSPALU (Tartu University, Estonia).

In 1995 Professor Imre Kátai received Szechenyi Prize – the highest Hungarian award for scientific work. Professor‘s scientific research in the probability theory and number theory as well as his study of probabilistic number theory are closely related to the branches of mathematics pursued by mathematicians of Vilnius University .

Professor Andres Metspalu is the Director of the Estonian Genome Centre, His scientific works are widely acknowledged and quoted. Professor has been the Head of the Department of Biotechnology of Tartu University since 1992. Students and scientists from many European scientific institutions including Vilnius University receive training and are taught new methods of molecular genetics.
