Newly Elected Rector Prof Rimvydas Petrauskas Will Swear an Oath to Vilnius University

On April 1 2020 (Wednesday) at 3 p.m. in Aula Parva Prof Rimvydas Petrauskas will solemnly read and sign the oath to Vilnius University (VU). It will be accepted by the chairmen of VU Council and Senate Dr Eglė Radzevičienė and Prof Dainora Pociūtė-Abukevičienė. From that moment, the newly elected Rector will take up the position of Rector of VU.

The oath of Prof R. Petrauskas will be broadcasted live on VU Facebook and YouTube platforms.

The VU Rector will swear to the University and promise to the members of the community to take care of the University's prosperity, to defend its autonomy and academic freedom, properly represent and promote its name in Lithuania and the world.

Due to the quarantine to prevent the spread of coronavirus (COVID-19), only the part of inauguration where the elected Rector will solemnly read and sign the oath to the University will be held on 1 April. The full solemn inauguration ceremony of the VU Rector is postponed to a later date.

The VU Senate adopted this decision on the Rector’s inauguration on 17 March.

The Rector of VU was elected out of six candidates by the VU Council on 22 January 2020.

Prof Dr Rimvydas Petrauskas is the Dean of the Faculty of History of Vilnius University, Chairman of the Board of Research Council of Lithuania, Full member of the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences, President of National Committee of Lithuanian History Sciences, former member of the Lithuanian Higher Education Council.
