Outstanding International Speakers at the International Conference Languages and People: Problems and Solutions

mikael kristenson 3aVlWP 7bg8 unsplashOn 29–30 September, Vilnius University (VU) will hold the sixth international conference of applied linguistics Languages and People: Problems and Solutions. The conference will feature presentations on sociolinguistics, language policy, hate speech, multilingualism, discourse analysis, language teaching and learning, language acquisition, corpus linguistics, forensic linguistics, linguistic pragmatics, lexicography, etc.

International guests will deliver keynote speeches. One of them is Annick De Houwer, Founder and Director of the Harmonious Bilingualism Network, Professor Emerita at the University of Erfurt (Germany). She will give a presentation “Supporting Bilinguals’ Well-being: A wish list for applied linguistics research in today’s diverse world” on the importance of bilingualism research in a globalised world, especially for bilingual pre-school children and newly arrived immigrants and re-immigrants.

Victoria Guillén-Nieto (University of Alicante, Spain) will deliver her presentation “Hate Speech: from the Rally to the Social Media Platform. An overview of the new legal and linguistic problems raised by digital hate“ on the manifestations of hate speech in the digital space, and the new legal and linguistic challenges it poses. Ms Guillén-Nieto is a forensic linguistics expert who has helped solve over 20 cases relating to authorship, plagiarism, sexual harassment, etc.

Marcus Callies (University of Bremen, Germany) is one of the compilers of VESPA and CLAN; the expert in foreign language learning and teaching will give a presentation “Teaching World Englishes at the Interface of Linguistics, Language Education and Classroom Practice” on English language teaching traditions and the importance of change in the light of the varieties and functions of English language.

The conference will have 16 sessions and over 70 speakers from 19 countries: Latvia, Poland, Finland, Germany, Spain, Sweden, Hungary, Italy, Estonia, India, the Philippines,

etc.
