Student Conference THE COINS 2021 – Lithuanian Leadership in Life Sciences

50976372352 9f188c0fcc kOn February 27, the students of Vilnius University Life Sciences Centre (VU LSC) are organizing the International Conference of Life Sciences THE COINS 2021.

Every year, this international event attracts many researchers to VU GMC from all over the world, including Nobel Prize winners. Due to the pandemic, this year’s event will take place virtually, and the presentations will be made by representatives of Lithuania’s scientific elite: Professor Virginijus Šikšnys, winner of the prestigious Kavli Prize and also the runner up for the Nobel Prize in Chemistry this year, and Ingrida Olendraitė, alumnus of VU GMC, a virologist at University of Cambridge. Scientists will talk about CRISPR-Cas immunity, targeted genome editing, and how to identify and understand a new RNA viruses.

The conference will be crowned with a panel discussion including Gintaras Valinčius, Director of VU GMC, Agnė Vaitkevičienė, Vice President of the Lithuanian Biotechnology Association, and other representatives in the field. They will discuss the contribution of the state in promoting innovation in life sciences and the importance of education in creating innovations.

Lithuania has an ambitious goal of becoming one of the leading countries in the region for life sciences in the next decade. In order to achieve this goal in our country, it is important not only to create innovations in life sciences and successfully apply them in business, but also to promote the growth and visibility of this industry internationally.
