The Coins 2023, an International Life Sciences Conference: Presenting Music from Signals Generated by Brain Neurons

On 24-27 April, Vilnius University (VU) Life Sciences Center will host the 17th international student-led life sciences conference "The COINS 2023. Changing the World Step by Step: from Theory to Practice". It is one of the largest student-organised life science conferences in Europe, attracting science stars from all over the world.

The aim of the conference is to share scientific knowledge with other students and the general public. The annual event brings together renowned scientists from Europe and the US. In the last five years, it has been attended by seven Professors Nobel Prize winners, namely Sir J. Fraser Stoddart, Harald Zur Hausen, Erwin Neher, Ada Yonath, John O'Keefe, Jean Marie Lehn, and Aaron Ciechanover.

This year's speakers include Dr Linda Partridge, founder of the Max Planck Institute for the Biology of Ageing and a fellow of the Royal Society, who was appointed Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE) for services to Science in 2009, Dr Gordon H. Piotr Trzonkowski, founder of PolTREG, a company dedicated to the commercialisation of investigational regulatory cells (Tregs) and immunosuppression therapies, and Dr Nuria Montserrat, EMBO Young Investigator and head of the research group at the Bioengineering Institute in Barcelona.

The conference will focus on applying the latest research to practice, and exploring cutting-edge discoveries in bioengineering, ecology, neuroscience and biomedicine. The attendees will experience how scientific discoveries are slowly changing our daily lives.

According to the organisers, the programme of events at the conference will be very broad.

"The conference will include lectures by scientists, interactive activities, a networking fair, and the already-traditional programme for pupils. We are looking forward to welcoming current and prospective students, as well as other curious people looking for a new career in the world of life sciences. We will also have a unique demonstration where music will be created from the signals generated by brain neurons recorded in an electroencephalogram," the conference organisers promise.

On the last day of the conference, there will be a networking fair for students. It will serve as a great opportunity to find out more about job and internship opportunities in NGOs, public entities, and private multinational companies operating in the fast-growing life sciences sector.

The organisers of The COINS 2023 invite all pupils of grades 9-12 who want to get a closer look at the world of life sciences to participate in the Pupils Programme on 24-27 April. Participants will be given an opportunity to listen to short theoretical lectures on plant flagella and enzymes and experience the daily routine of a scientist through laboratory work.
