arkadu kiemasThe international 2023 Times Higher Education (THE) top university rankings have been released. According to the results, Vilnius University (VU) achieved the best results in the International Outlook and Citation categories.

The results of the rankings reflect the strategic priorities of the university: maintaining a global image and scientific work at the highest international level. The growing position of VU in the international market is also related to the high citation rate. The university’s growing influence in spreading scientific ideas increases awareness and helps to attract more students, PhD students and professors from all over the world every year.

The indicator Citation, indicating the influence of higher education institutions on global research, has jumped by a third over the past four years – from 32 per cent up to 47 per cent. Meanwhile, the International outlook indicator reflecting international attractiveness remained at a similar high position of 55.5 per cent.

VU competed with other world universities in nine disciplines. VU is ranked highest this year in medical and health sciences (301–400 place), as well as in life sciences, psychology and education (401–500 place). In all these categories, VU is an unequivocal leader among Lithuanian higher education institutions. In addition, on a local scale, VU leads in the fields of humanities and physical sciences.

Although the title of the best university in the world is retained by the University of Oxford for the seventh year in a row, the first nine places of the new ranking are dominated by higher education institutions in the United States.

VU is among the 801–1000 best universities in the world and is the leading university in Lithuania. This year, the ranking evaluates about 1,800 higher education institutions from 104 countries.

THE ranking established in 2004 evaluates universities according to 5 main criteria: Teaching, Research, Citations, International Outlook and Industry Income.
