Italian philology

Humanity's experience has been enriched by extraordinary individuals – creators of Italian literature, art and science; travellers; and inventors – whose example inspires and educates. Italians still speak Dante's language today, which has remained virtually unchanged since the 13th century. Italian terms are used by artists all over the world, and Umberto Eco's The Name of the Rose will continue to fuel readers' imaginations for a long time to come. In Italian philology studies, you will learn Italian professionally and get to know its Latin origins. Elective courses such as Italian Renaissance and Baroque Art, Italian Theatre and Italian Literary Classics will provide a broad general education. The programme allows you to select the most interesting and relevant subjects and acquire valuable skills that will open the door to current and future professions.

Why choose this programme?

Lukaš Kaminski

Programme alumnus, PhD student at the faculty of Communication, Vilnius University

Italian Philology studies provided me with a solid foundation in the Italian language, culture, and history, which I apply in a wide range of activities. Working in television, I conduct interviews with Italian-speaking guests on air. As a licensed tour guide, I introduce Vilnius to Italian tourists in their native language and also host events in Italian. People often notice and appreciate my in-depth knowledge of Italian culture and everyday life. Even after completing my studies, my ties with the Department of Italian Linguistics and Literature have remained strong: I continue to take an interest in Italian dialects and participate in academic and cultural activities. These studies open up many different career paths – from media and tourism to event management or academia. They are studies that provide not only knowledge, but also very broad professional opportunities.
