The program is designed to train highly qualified materials technology specialists with modern knowledge in chemistry, pharmacy, technology, and biology, as well as strong research skills. Studies enable the creation and analysis of pharmaceutical substances, as well as the solution of pharmaceutical chemistry problems, in research institutions or pharmaceutical production companies. Research projects, together with the final thesis, account for half of the program, ensuring engagement in advanced research and the development of practical skills.

  • You will be able to integrate knowledge of chemistry, biology, and pharmacology in practical research contexts.
  • You will be capable of evaluating drug effects from the molecular level through to the whole organism.
  • You will gain the ability to apply modern principles of drug synthesis, production, and validation.
  • You will develop the skills to plan, design, and conduct experimental research using advanced instrumental techniques.
  • You will acquire competence in analysing, systematising, and interpreting scientific and experimental data.
  • You will learn to critically assess the quality, reliability, and relevance of scientific information.
  • You will be prepared to propose innovative solutions to complex challenges in pharmaceutical chemistry.
  • You will be able to select, justify, and apply appropriate technological and methodological approaches.
  • You will strengthen your ability to solve problems creatively, including in uncertain or complex situations.
  • You will be equipped to model and evaluate advanced strategies in drug design and development.
  • You will develop the ability to communicate research results effectively to both specialists and the public in English.
  • You will gain awareness of the environmental and societal impacts of pharmaceutical research and development.

Career prospects

Pharmaceutical Chemistry studies provide an excellent starting point if you want to develop new drugs, work in modern laboratories, and contribute to the advancement of pharmaceutical technologies. You will gain in-depth knowledge and practical skills, enabling you to synthesise and analyse biologically active compounds and solve complex pharmaceutical chemistry problems.

Our alumni work in high-technology industry companies, including those in the pharmaceutical, medical, and biotechnology sectors, as well as in university, research institute, and hospital laboratories and study centers, contributing to the development of new drugs and innovative technologies.

If you pursue an academic career, you may continue with doctoral studies and develop new drug synthesis methods and technologies at universities, research institutes, or corporate R&D departments in Lithuania and abroad.

Pharmaceutical chemistry knowledge is also highly valued in the public sector, including ministries, innovation agencies, technology parks, and research centers, where analytical thinking, data evaluation, and complex problem-solving skills are essential.

In-depth knowledge and critical-thinking skills provide a solid foundation for careers as a manager or consultant in both the private and public sectors.

Why choose this programme?

dr. Edvinas Orentas

Professor at the Faculty of Chemistry and Geosciences, Vilnius University

The Master’s in Pharmaceutical Chemistry provides a unique combination of advanced drug design, analytical techniques, and hands-on research, preparing students to tackle real-world challenges in the pharmaceutical industry. You will gain practical experience in R&D, spectroscopy, chromatography, and quality control, while also developing critical thinking, problem-solving, and innovation skills. Graduates are fully equipped to pursue careers in industrial research, pharmaceutical companies, or further academic studies, contributing to the creation of innovative therapies and cutting-edge drug technologies. I highly recommend this program to anyone looking to turn scientific knowledge into meaningful solutions for global health.

Why choose this programme?

Felix Lücke

PhD student at Center for Physical Sciences and Technology

The Pharmaceutical Chemistry program gave me great insight into both the academical and also industrial side of the field. The two most enjoyable parts of the studies for me were the early introduction to my work group in which I worked for my thesis and the lectures teaching us about some of the most modern drug development methods and therapies. These lectures were given by experts from their respective fields that work in world-renowned companies. The wide array of work groups which one can join for their thesis work and the choice between many interesting elective courses means that one can try out different aspects of pharmaceutical chemistry or specialize early for a more focused approach.

Viktorija Juščenko, Second-year student

I am very pleased that I chose to pursue a Master's degree in Pharmaceutical Chemistry. It allowed me to delve deeper into something that had long interested me – the principles of drug development. When I started, I expected to gain more knowledge, but I got much more; I met wonderful lecturers and students. Additionally, I gained a lot of practical experience and valuable advice related to it. If I had to go back, I don't think I would choose any other studies. Throughout my studies, I didn't feel pressured to study – it was just interesting.
