Arqus Webinar to Explore the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning in Higher Education

The next Arqus Teaching Innovation webinar will focus on the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) and its role in enhancing academic practice in higher education. The online session, titled “Enhancing Academic Practice through SoTL: A Literature-Informed Approach”, will take place on 28 May 2026 at 13:00 CEST.

The webinar will build on a literature review of SoTL conducted by the Centre for Teaching and Learning at Maynooth University as part of an initiative funded by Ireland’s National Forum for the Enhancement of Teaching and Learning in Higher Education.

Facilitated by Dr Tazila Ramputh and Dr Orla Hanratty from the Centre for Teaching and Learning at Maynooth University, the session will explore SoTL as a systematic, evidence-informed and publicly shared enquiry into student learning. Grounded in international scholarship, it will examine how SoTL can support the development of academic practice across higher education contexts.

The session will be structured around key themes in the literature, including the conceptualisation of SoTL, academic professional growth and institutional engagement. It will address both the opportunities and challenges associated with SoTL, including ongoing debates around its definition, recognition and sustainability.

The webinar will also highlight the value of SoTL for academics seeking to deepen their understanding of teaching and learning, strengthen their scholarly identity and contribute to shared knowledge within and beyond their institutions.

Drawing on these insights, the session will consider how academic practice can be meaningfully advanced through SoTL, with a particular focus on the conditions that support sustained engagement across diverse institutional contexts.

Participants will have the opportunity to:

  • gain a clear, research-informed understanding of SoTL;
  • engage with current debates and challenges in the field;
  • explore the relevance of SoTL to their own teaching and academic identity;
  • identify conditions that support meaningful and sustainable engagement with SoTL;
  • reflect on how SoTL can strengthen academic practice within their institutions.
