Doctoral studies begin on October 1. By that time, please complete all the required steps listed in the Guide for Doctoral Students.

During the first two months of the doctoral studies, the doctoral student must prepare an individual work plan in consultation with the supervisor. The work plan must be approved by the Doctoral Committee. The work plan can be changed during the doctoral studies. In this case, the changes must be agreed with the supervisor and submitted to the Doctoral Committee.

Study subjects can be chosen from doctoral studies in all fields of science.

Those who report for the last year of doctoral studies

Those who report for the last year of doctoral studies must submit a dissertation manuscript to the Doctoral Committee. The requirements for the dissertation manuscript shall be determined by the Doctoral Committees of the fields of study. These requirements shall be published on the websites of the units. Doctoral students who have studied in a state-funded place without fulfilling this requirement will be required to return the funds (70 basic social benefit amounts) to the state budget. Trips

When planning a trip
  • When planning a trip, the doctoral student should consult with the supervisor and take into account the recommendations to choose which conference, internship or event to go.
  • In case of questions about the reimbursement of travel expenses, the doctoral student can consult the person in charge of the unit's finances.
  • Before leaving the doctoral student must fill in a request (request example) and send it to the Doctoral and Postdoctoral Department (email address: drs@cr.vu.lt).
  • The doctoral student may leave only when the order of the Rector or his / her authorized person has been prepared and signed.
During your trip and upon returning from the trip
  • During your trip, collect and keep all original financial documents related to your travel expenses.
  • Upon returning from the trip, submit original financial documents regarding actual expenses incurred during the trip to the VU Finance Department (room 244) within 5 working days:
  1. train, bus tickets (cheques, invoices); 
  2. local transport tickets; 
  3. documents proving the cost of renting a residential space, if you purchased the services not as a legal entity (invoices, checks, receipts for receiving money, bank statements (if paid by bank card);
  4. if traveling by own car – a copy of the vehicle registration certificate and fuel purchase receipts/checks. If several doctoral students travel in one car, fuel/travel expenses are paid only for one person traveling; 
  5. the doctoral student must ensure that VAT invoices, bills of exchange and other financial documents containint the payer (recipient) are issued to him/her.
     
  • You can pay for expenses incurred during the trip and fill out a trip report:
  1. DVS "Avilys" (when reports for doctoral students are submitted by the responsible employee of the core department); 
  2. by email to ilma.jonaityte@cr.vu.lt (submitted by doctoral students); 
  3. upon arrival at VU Finance Department, room 244.

Before submitting the completed report to the Finance Department, it is recommended to contact Ilma Jonaitytė (8 5) 2687008.

Request examples

Academic leave

  • A doctoral student is granted academic leave for important reasons (childbirth, parental leave, doctoral student's illness, etc.) upon submission of a request and documents substantiating the reason for the leave.
  • Academic leave for personal reasons is granted to a doctoral student for a maximum period of one year during all doctoral studies. It is then sufficient to submit a request (no supporting documents are required).
  • The request for academic leave must be endorsed by the supervisor and the chair of the Doctoral Committee or head of unit.
  • The completed and signed request must be submitted to the Doctoral and Postdoctoral Department.
    Before returning from academic leave, a request for reimbursement must be submitted to the Doctoral and Postdoctoral Department. A person who does not return from academic leave for 15 days without a valid reason shall be expelled from the doctoral studies.
  • A doctoral student who is on academic leave due to illness, on the recommendation of a doctor or doctors' advisory commission, on maternity or parental leave and notifies the research and study institution in writing before the expiration of the academic leave is exempted from returning.

Funding

Scholarships / Grants

State-funded PhD students receive a scholarship, the amount of which is regulated by the Government of the Republic of Lithuania's Resolution "On the Implementation of the Law of the Republic of Lithuania on Science and Studies".

The amount of the scholarship is as follows:

  1. for doctoral students in the first year of their doctoral studies - 19.0 BSA*;
  2. for doctoral students in the second and subsequent years of their doctoral studies - 22.0 BSA*.

*BSA - basic social allowance. From 1 January 2025, the BSA is 70 EUR.

Research Council of Lithuania support

The Lithuanian Research Council allocates funding annually under two types of grants:

  • Grants for outstanding study results. The aim of the grant is to support doctoral students who are studying productively, the amount of the support is not more than 96 basic social allowance per year.
    The call for proposals is open annually from 15 October to 15 December.
  • Support for academic trips. The aim of the grant is to enable doctoral students to improve their scientific qualifications by participating in events abroad, to increase the international mobility of doctoral students, and to support the international dissemination of Lithuanian research results. The amount of the support shall not exceed 30 basic social allowances; no more than one grant per doctoral student per year shall be allocated for a single research trip.

The call is launched twice each year: from 15 October to 15 November for the first half of the following year and from 15 April to 15 May for the second half of the same year.

FAQ

What is the duration of studies?

The duration of doctoral studies depends on the form of doctoral studies chosen: full-time doctoral studies last up to four years and part-time doctoral studies last up to six years.

Are there any external courses?

There are no external studies. The only way to obtain a PhD is by external study - by independently preparing a doctoral thesis (a published scientific monograph can be submitted as a thesis) and passing the doctoral examinations.

When can I order my student certificate?

Student certificates can be ordered as soon as the doctoral studies start, i.e. from 1 October.

Can I send my field trip application by email?

You can also send an application for a field trip by email. It is important that it is completed in full and signed.

Can I send my academic leave application by email?

You can also send your leave application by email. It is important that it is completed and signed in full.

Is it necessary to write the application before returning from leave?

A signed application for return to study must be delivered to the Doctoral and Postdoctoral Office before returning from academic leave. Failure to submit this request may result in the doctoral student being withdrawn from the course.

Can I attend general skills training at another institution?

Doctoral students can choose where and which training they want to attend.

Where can I find out about my study cart balance?

All finances of the doctoral student are supervised by the financial officer of the faculty.

When is the scholarship transferred?

For doctoral students, the scholarship is transferred in the second half of the month.
