Final Arqus Webinar to Explore Assessment in English-Taught Courses

The Arqus Alliance invites the academic community to the fifth and final webinar in this year’s English-Medium Instruction (EMI) Seminar Series, organised by Maynooth University.
The webinar, titled “Assessment in EMI: Aligning Content and Language through Disciplinary Literacies”, will take place online on 11 June, from 14:00 to 15:00 CEST. This year’s seminar series focuses on effective assessment in English-taught programmes and classes.
The session will be delivered by Dr Mario Molina Naar, lecturer at the Department of Languages and Culture at Universidad de los Andes, Colombia. It will address common concerns about the possible impact of EMI on content learning and academic achievement. The webinar will also highlight the role of the epistemological foundations of academic disciplines in developing cognitive skills and disciplinary knowledge.
Drawing on established educational frameworks, including Bloom’s Taxonomy, cognitive discourse functions and disciplinary literacies, the webinar will present practical approaches to assessing both subject content and academic language in EMI higher education contexts. Participants will also explore key concepts in assessment literacy, such as constructive alignment and assessment of, for and as learning.
Dr Molina Naar holds a PhD in Education, specialising in plurilingual and intercultural education, from the Autonomous University of Barcelona, Spain, and an MA in TESOL from Greensboro College, North Carolina, USA. His research focuses on EMI and the internationalisation of higher education in multilingual contexts.
