Join the Online Holodomor Course Preview and Zelenskyy’s Livestream Address

Vilnius University, as a member of the Global Coalition of Ukrainian Studies, invites you to join an upcoming online preview of a new course on the Holodomor, the 1932–33 genocide of the Ukrainian people, and to watch the livestream of an address to students by the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

The preview of “Famine as Genocide in the 20th Century – Teaching the Holodomor through a Global Online Course” will take place online on 19 March 2026 at 5:00 p.m. Kyiv time. The innovative new online course was developed by the Canadian Institute of Ukrainian Studies (CIUS) at the University of Alberta through the Holodomor Research and Education Consortium (HREC). This online event offers members of the Global Coalition of Ukrainian Studies an opportunity to preview the course ahead of its global launch on Coursera on 23 March 2026.

The 13-module course, which will be freely accessible worldwide, was developed in cooperation with leading international scholars in Ukrainian history, Soviet studies, and genocide studies, including Frank Sysyn, Olga Andriewsky, Lynne Viola, Taras Koznarsky, Henry Prown, Kristina Hook, John Vsetecka, and Karolina Koziura.

During the event, selected excerpts from the course will be presented. This will be followed by a discussion with several contributors about the project’s key themes and its potential as a teaching tool for universities worldwide.

The course aims to make decades of Holodomor research accessible to a global audience of students, educators, and scholars, and to support the integration of the topic into courses on genocide studies, Soviet history, empire, colonialism, and twentieth-century political violence. Registration for the online event is available here.

Members of the Global Coalition of Ukrainian Studies are also invited to join a special Grande Conférence featuring the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, hosted by Sciences Po in Paris. The address will be delivered in English on Friday, 13 March, at 3:45 p.m. Paris time. The event will provide an opportunity for dialogue with the French student and academic community. It will also be available via livestream for students from partner universities (here). The schedule may change depending on the President’s agenda.
