Maintenance Works to Begin in the Vilnius University Grand Courtyard in July

As part of scheduled roof repair works on St Johns’ Church, a section of the Grand Courtyard of Vilnius University will be temporarily closed from 7 July 2026. Access through the gate on Pilies Street will also be closed. Visitor access to the Vilnius University Museum will also be affected.

From 7 July 2026, access to the Grand Courtyard and Konstantinas Sirvydas Courtyard of Vilnius University will be available via Motiejus Kazimieras Sarbievijus Courtyard, entering through the Library Courtyard from Universiteto Street.

A construction site will be established on Šv. Jono Street, therefore, parking spaces in this area will be removed. Access to St Johns’ Church will only be possible via the Library Courtyard, entering from Universiteto Street.

During the renovation period, visitors wishing to access the Vilnius University Museum spaces – the Bell Tower and the architectural ensemble – will likewise be directed through Motiejus Kazimieras Sarbievijus Courtyard from Universiteto Street. A ticket booth will be operating next to the Bell Tower of St Johns’ Church.

During the renovation period, the opening hours of the Bell Tower of the Church will remain unchanged (Monday–Sunday, 10:00–19:00, tickets available until 18:30), but visiting the Bell Tower on 7–8 July will not be possible.

The roof repair works on St Johns’ Church will include structural repairs, insulation and sealing works, and the replacement of the roof tile covering. Works will involve repairing cracks in the façade walls and waterproofing the foundations along the Church’s western façade (facing the Grand Courtyard), southern façade (facing Šv. Jono Street), and eastern façade (facing Pilies Street) of the Church.

The scheduled repair works, partially funded by the Department of Cultural Heritage under the Ministry of Culture, are an important and significant stage in the restoration of the Vilnius University complex.

The works are scheduled to begin on 7 July 2026 and to be completed by 31 December 2027.
