MAIN SCIENTIFIC ACHIEVEMENTS IN 2015

Dr. Rasa Klioštoraitytė and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Dainius Būrė were awarded with the Order of the Star of Italy (onorificenza di Cavaliere dell’Ordine della „Stella d’Italia“) by the Italian Foreign Ministry for the promotion and dissemination of Italian literature and culture in Lithuania. 

Assoc. Prof. Kęstutis Urba was awarded the Culture and Art Prize by the Lithuanian Government for his merit in promoting children’s literature.

Assoc. Prof. Erika Sausverdė was awarded the Order of the President of Lithuania for serving the country.

Dr. Deimantas Valančiūnas received the award of the government of India (Vishwa Hindi Samman) for the promotion and dissemination of the Hindi language abroad. 

Dr. Vytautas Rinkevičius received the award of Birštonas municipality for his contribution in the field of Baltic research.

Projects Supported by University Budget

Synchronic, Diachronic and Typological Investigations into the Lexical, Phonological and Grammatical Systems of the Baltic Languages. Prof. B. Stundžia. 2016–2018.

The main activity of the year 2015 was the preparation and publication of several articles as well as a handbook in E-Resources. The focus of the research was on the synchronic, diachronic and typological analysis of the Baltic Languages: word formation patterns of hybrid neoclassical nouns and adjectives in Lithuanian, morphological and semantic-syntactic structures of the German, Old Prussian and Lithuanian compounds of the 15–18 c. and the importance of the correlation of acoustic features in the distinction of the Lithuanian tones were analysed.

The aim of the project is to study the names of foreign origin of Lithuanian citizens as found in the webpage vardai.vllk.lt from a variety of linguistic perspectives and to evaluate them from a normative point of view.

Attention has been paid to classical literary genres and the dynamic conception of the generic models, to the interpretation of texts and to the poetics of the Hellenistic epos. The tradition of translation of classical texts was carried on.

Germanic and Romance Literary and Cultural Texts. Prof. R. Rudaitytė. 2010–2017.

The department has been carrying out investigation of literary trends, genres and problems of poetics, the development of literary traditions, the relationship of literary texts with Philosophy, Aesthetics, Psychology, Sociology and other theoretical systems. Some of the academic staff has been continually doing research in the field of the history of Germanic literatures and literatures in Romance languages and publishing articles on the related issues.

The focus of the research is on the synchronic and diachronic analysis of language-specific features characteristic of the grammatical, lexical and semantic structure of the languages under study. The main objective of the project is to explore realizations of modality (epistemic and non-epistemic), indirect inferential and reportive evidentiality in Lithuanian and to investigate the phenomena closely related to them. The analysis is corpus-based. Use is made of the Corpus of Academic Lithuanian, the bidirectional parallel corpusParaCorpEN-LT-EN, the concordances of Old Lithuanian texts (16th–17th centuries).

The focus of the research is on the synchronic and diachronic analysis of language-specific features characteristic of the grammatical, lexical and semantic structure of the languages under study. The range of research methods used and theoretical approaches followed varies greatly: from purely descriptive to functional, from cognitive to socio-linguistic, from quantitative to qualitative analysis of authentic language data.

Language Usage, Language Learning and Teaching. Prof. M. Ramonienė. 2006–2016.

Analysis of language usage, language attitudes, language learning, teaching and language policy was carried out. The following areas were examined: socially significant changes in the use of Lithuanian and local vernaculars, evolving levels of multilingualism and local language in cities and towns of Lithuania and in Lithuanian diaspora. Also the analysis of communicative and sociocultural competence in use of Lithuanian was carried out.

Aim of the Project is to prepare an on-line Lithuanian course level A2 aimed at adults studying with a teacher. Goals of the Project are to prepare: course materials for eleven topics as well as progress tests at the end of each topic; course illustrations for eleven topics, including pictures and pictorial stories; materials for audio recordings, record and add them to a learning website; materials for videos with grammar explanations, shoot and integrate them into a learning website; the grammar compendium as a separate manual; the learner’s list of words in Lithuanian and English, i.e. a concise dictionary; the teacher’s materials.

Investigations of Germanic, Romance and Lithuanian Languages. Prof. A. Usonienė. 2010–2017.

The Department of German Philology participates in this project together with other departments dealing with Germanic Languages. Research in this project ranges from theoretical linguistics to applied linguistics; many investigators use a contrastive approach. In 2015 the members of the Department of German Philology prepared three articles and one teaching aid. The members of the department delivered five presentations at international conferences in Lithuania and Austria.

Functioning of Polish Literature in Lithuania. Prof. A. Kalėda. 2007–2017.

The research aims at indicating the peculiarities of Polish literature in Lithuania, analysing its relationship with other literatures, especially with Lithuanian. The subject of research was chosen as a problem of literary process, creative work of Polish writers having close connections with Lithuania was also investigated. The results were announced in papers and reports. International conference Passageway of Witold Hulewicz was organized together with Jagiellonian University.

Problems of the Polish Language, Culture, History and Ethno-linguistics in Lithuania. Assoc. Prof. M. Davlevič, Assoc. Prof. V. Ušinskienė. 2007–2017.

Historical and sociolinguistic exploration of Polish dialects in Lithuania is continued in cooperation with Warsaw University. Some research is conducted in the contemporary Polish language: lexicological, etymological, source materials, the language of children, the language of intelligence, students’ slang, Polish media’s language in Lithuania, vocabulary of the scope of politics used by Polish people of Vilnius district. Representatives of the Centre of Polish Studies took part in several national research projects and international conferences. 13th international conference of Polish Studies students was organized.

Grand Duchy of Lithuania Court books stored in VUB, digitization and creation of database, Nr. LIT-5-19: http://www.teismuknygos.mb.vu.lt/en. The project manager M. Prokopčik (VU Library), investigators – V. Ušinskienė, R. Jakubėnas.

VUL Manuscript collection includes 543 books of court acts of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, 1540–1845. They are a significant source of material culture. Books are written in old Belorussian (Ruthenian), Latin and Polish languages. The main goal of the project  is to preserve these unique manuscripts for future generations, to create a full database of all names.

The Department has been carrying out investigations in the fields of the Russian political and other discourses, Baltic-Slavonic contrastive /comparative studies, sociolinguistic aspects of the Russian language in Lithuania, Russian literature of the 19th and 20th centuries and methods of interpretation of Russian literature, the relationship of literary texts with Philosophy and Sociology. Some of the academic staff has been continually doing research on the archive studies of literature and culture of interwar Lithuania and publishing articles on the related issues.

Geography of Literature: Textual Territories and Imaginary Maps (VP1-3.1-ŠMM-07-K-067 Support to Research of Scientists and Other Researchers (Global Grant). Dr. I. Vidugirytė-Pakerienė. 2011–2015.

The primary goal of the project is to establish and advance scholarly research in the field of the geography of literature in Lithuania. The proposed project has two goals: researching, writing and publishing scholarly monographs on the topic of literary geography and preparing interactive maps outlining the findings of the research. The main objective of the project is to complete two. Each monograph will be accompanied by an interactive, web-based and user-friendly map, pointing to the complex relationship between geography and literature. In addition, the project will include a map outlining the global spread of the cultural and literary heritage of the Lithuanian Grand Duchy, followed by two scholarly articles on the same subject.

The academic staff of the Department wrote articles, participated at conferences on literary translation, translation theory and translation training methodology. The project aims at preparing a book on the passive voice in Lithuanian by translating the works on this issue by Emma Geniušienė, a renowned typologist, and supplementing them with a new theoretical chapter, which will reflect the achievement of theoretical and typological research into the passive voice during the last decade.

International Research Projects

European Commission funded project: On-Line Resources for Conference Interpreter Training (ORCIT V). Project coordinator Dr. N. Maskaliūnienė. 2011–2016.

The aim of the ORCIT project is to develop and pilot an open interactive multi-media learning resource in conference interpreting skills using a designated website for this purpose (www.orcit.eu). The interactive medium is intended for postgraduate interpreter training schools in the EU member states and non-EU countries. The partners of the project comprise the University of Vilnius, Lithuania, the University of Leeds, UK, Aristotle University of Tsesaloniki, Greece, Charles University in Prague, Comillas Pontifical University in Madrid, Spain, the University of Heidelberg, Germany, University of Ljubljana, Slovenia, and ISIT in Paris, France.

463 encyclopedic articles, covering the fields of semiotics (semiotics of Greimas, Lotman), naratology, intertextuality, textology and literature interpretation theories, were written. Together with related terms (cross-references) the articles contain circa 600 defined terms.

The aim of the project is to accumulate a comprehensive corpus of archival and bibliographical material held in Lithuanian archives and/or published in Lithuanian press (in Lithuania and in exile), which will provide further research in Greimas studies with a documentary basis. A substantial textual corpus is being prepared for the fundamental two-volume study Algirdas Julius Greimas: Asmuo ir idėjos (Algirdas Julius Greimas: The Self and Ideas). A directory of Lithuanian archives holding Greimas material and a bibliography of Greimas’s publications in Lithuanian, as well as a selection of his papers and some video and audio material will be made openly available on the web page www.semiotika.lt.

The Centre of Scandinavian Studies participates in this project together with other departments of the Faculty of Philology.

Research based on an interdisciplinary approach, combining linguistics, archeology, genetics and  dealing with the oldest contacts around the Baltic Sea, was commenced.

Research in the 20th–21st century Nordic literature was continued with the focus on Scandinavian narrative prose. A comparative research on the evolution of the culture hero was carried out.

The Centre of Scandinavian Studies participates in this project together with other departments of the Faculty of Philology.  

The work on the Norwegian-Lithuanian (about 40 000 entries) and Swedish-Lithuanian (about 30 000 entries) dictionaries was continued. Writing of practical handbooks of Scandinavian (Danish and Swedish, Old Norse) languages was carried on. Compilation of small Scandinavian (Icelandic, Norwegian)-Lithuanian Dictionaries was carried on. Research in the areas of Lithuanian sociolinguistics, language planning and standardization ideologies was continued.

Work on the e-handbook for Old Norse was commenced.

International Research Projects

Nordic Council of Ministers’ program Nordplus Neighbour is supporting the wide-scale project NordUd, including professors’ exchange. Coordinator – Sladana Zivkovic. 

Project partners: Vilnius University, Helsinki University, Iceland University, Copenhagen University, Stockholm University, Latvia University, Tartu University.

NordUd is an international network focusing on developing and enhancing the quality of education at Scandinavian departments, departments of Finnish and departments of linguistics in the Nordic countries and the Baltic States. This aim is reached through various forms of cooperation and exchange of knowledge, experience and best practice. Through offering the best possible educations in Scandinavian Studies and Finnish the NordUd network supports and strengthens mutual Nordic-Balticlinguistic and cultural understanding. NordUd is coordinated by Skandinavistikos Centras at Vilnius University, http://www.flf.vu.lt/struktura/katedros/skandinavistikos-centras/1498-nordud.
