Research Professor (Research and Development of New Genome Editing Tools)

Research professor at Vilnius University is an internationally recognised leader in their science field; it is the highest position in research at the university. The research professor’s responsibilities include organising and performing research and development activities, as well as disseminating its results at national and international levels, training researchers, providing expert recommendations, and educating the society .
Description and responsibilities of the position:
It is expected that the Research Professor will independently (and/or in collaboration with other researchers) initiate and conduct high-quality national and international research in (genome editing) and will publish the results of their research in internationally recognised journals. They will seek to attract external funding for research activities being implemented, as well as submit the applications for and implement the funded projects. They will form and lead a group of researchers conducting research in (the development of engineered RNA, DNA and protein components for improving the safety and efficiency of genome editing). They will supervise students’ doctoral dissertations, final theses (when necessary), and the work of research fellows. As an expert in their field, they will provide insights and recommendations to the public (when necessary). They will foster professional relations with their colleagues abroad. They will take an active part in national and international associations in their field. They will implement other functions assigned to research professor related to research, methodological, and organisational activity, as provided for in the legal acts of Vilnius University.
Required qualifications:
Doctoral degree (Molecular and cellular biology, and biochemistry).
Supervision of at least one successfully defended doctoral dissertation or postdoctoral intern.
Leadership of an independent research team for at least four years.
Presentation of their team’s research at four or more international scientific events.
Principle Investigator of at least one research project funded by an international source, such as the European Research Council.
Co-inventor on at least one patent application.
Author of at least eight scientific articles in peer-reviewed publications that have a citation index in the Clarivate Analytics Web of Science database

In case the candidates are of equal standing, the following will be considered an advantage:
Current supervision of PhD students and postdoctoral researchers.
Leadership of successfully funded grants and/or supervision of postdoctoral fellowships, whether domestic or international.
Experience in organizing international conferences.
Publicly available scientific articles (or pre-prints if currently in review) for their team’s research.
Supervision and committee participation for completed student theses (BS, MS, PhD).
Record of science advocacy in national and international media.

Start of work: 1 September 2026, the contest is held for a five-year term of office.
Workload: Part-time position 0,25 FTE.
Official monthly salary (gross): EUR 1060.00.
