Studies in the Lithuanian language at Vilnius University
If you wish to apply for studies conducted in the Lithuanian language, you should apply via the VU Admission System – under the procedure described below.
1. Who can apply and what type of funding you can receive
If you wish to apply for studies conducted in the Lithuanian language, you must apply together with Lithuanian applicants via the VU Admission System, following the procedure described below.
You can apply for both state-funded and non-state-funded study places if you are:
- a citizen of the Republic of Lithuania;
- a citizen of another European Union (EU) or European Free Trade Association (EFTA) member state;
- a non-EU/EFTA citizen who has been granted the right of permanent residence in the Republic of Lithuania;
- a child, grandchild or great-grandchild of the Lithuanian Diaspora;
- a person of Lithuanian origin.
You can apply only for non-state-funded study places if you are:
- an applicant who does not fall into any of the categories listed above;
- an applicant from a non-EU/EFTA country who holds a temporary residence permit (TRP) in Lithuania.
2. Choose a study programme
The study programmes you can apply for via the VU Admission System are listed in the full list of study programmes conducted in the Lithuanian language.
Each applicant must meet the competitive score requirements that are listed in the Table of Competitive Scores. The same rule applies to applicants with foreign qualifications. If you make an application, we at Vilnius University will verify your education and convert the grades.
3. Proving your Lithuanian language proficiency
To be admitted to study programmes conducted in Lithuanian, you must prove that your Lithuanian language proficiency meets the required level.
Taking a Lithuanian language proficiency test
Please contact the Department of Lithuanian Studies at the Faculty of Philology at Vilnius University in order to take a Lithuanian language proficiency test.
You will be exempt from providing proof of proficiency in Lithuanian language if you will have taken the State Lithuanian language exam or if you will have a proof of a reached B2 level from a competent institution.
Lithuanian Language Courses
If you do not reach the required level of proficiency for admission, you may take one of the Lithuanian Language Courses for a semester or even a full academic year to improve your language skills.
4. Preparing the documents for admission
The documents that have to be submitted to the VU Admission System are:
- A certificate issued by Vilnius University regarding the test of Lithuanian language or document issued by other competent authority (an embassy, municipality or officially registered Lithuanian community of respectful country);
- Passport or ID card;
- Diploma and the marks sheet/list;
- An official translation to the Lithuanian language of the diploma and the marks sheet/list;
- A copy of a document evidencing the citizenship of an EU/EFTA member country or the status of a family member of the Republic of Lithuania, the European Union or a state of the European Free Trade Association (if applicable).
A more detailed list of documents required for international applicants is provided in the full document requirements section.
5. Apply for studies
The admission procedure consists of the 1st and 2nd Main Admission rounds and the Additional admission round. During the 1st round, you are allowed to apply for every study place while on the second and Additional admission you are only able to apply for the vacant places left after the previous rounds in the order of succession.
When choosing where you want to study you have to prioritize your choices, meaning that to be considered for admission you have to list at least one study program with at least one type of funding.
In your admissions request, you can add up to 8 study programmes with types of funding. Please note that since the admission procedure is a contest, the order of study places and priorities that you include are highly important: the eligibility is evaluated starting from the first item on the list. You will be given only one offer to study during one admission round.
