Book Borrowing

The Library only provides book borrowing services for the members of Vilnius University community. These services are provided in a non-contact way. Books can be borrowed only when requested in advance.

Books can be borrowed from:

  • The Central Library and the Scholarly Communication and Information Centre (SCIC) Mondays to Fridays from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.
  • Šiauliai Academy Information Centre: Mondays to Saturdays at times indicated here.
  • Faculty and centre reading rooms: Mondays to Fridays at times indicated here.

How to order books:

  • Log-in to Virtual Library and find books you need.
  • You can browse publications of Šiauliai Academy Information Centre by logging to ŠAIC Virtual Library.
  • Select Place a request.

It will take up to 3 days to carry out your request. You will be informed about the status of your request via e-mail. This can also be done by checking your personal account in Virtual Library.

Please note that information on the requested books will be sent to an e-mail account provided by VU.

Requested books can be taken from the lockers at the Central Library, at Information Desk in the Scholarly Communication and Information Centre and in faculty and centre reading rooms. 

The requested books will be kept for three days after information about the completion of the request has been sent.

Manuscripts and Rare Books reading rooms 

There is no possibility to borrow documents from these collections. However, all users of Vilnius University Library have the possibility to work in Rare Books and Manuscripts Reading Rooms (up to two users in a reading room at a time). Registration in advance is required via email:

  • Rare Books Reading Room: e-mail at (your registration is accepted only after receiving a confirmation e-mail from the library staff)
    Opening hours. Monday to Thursday: from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Friday: from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Manuscripts Reading Room: e-mail at (your registration is accepted only after receiving a confirmation e-mail from the library staff)
    Opening hours. Monday to Thursday: from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Friday: from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

 

We kindly remind you that:

  • You are welcome to use VU Library’s Digital Collections.
  • If you are a member of VU community and a document or its part is necessary for your research, you can contact the Library’s Rare Books Reading Room (via e-mail ) or Manuscripts Reading Room (via e-mail ) about the possibility of digitising it.

 

Book return

Books can be returned only at the same place where they were borrowed. Books can be returned using self-service or in designated places at:

  • The Central Library and the Scholarly Communication and Information Centre (SCIC) Mondays to Fridays from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.
  • Šiauliai Academy Information Centre: Mondays to Saturdays at times indicated here.
  • Faculty and centre reading rooms: Monday to Fridays at times indicated here.

Users who aren’t in Vilnius may return borrowed books after the quarantine. During the quarantine fines will not be incurred. For all issues related to clearance procedure, please approach your subject librarian

 

You are welcome to use VU Library’s e-resources. If you have any questions, please contact the subject librarian of your faculty.

 

Please take notice of the following when visiting the Library:

  • When coming to take or return books, please observe no less than a two-metre distance between yourself and other users of the Library.
  • It is obligatory to wear face masks in the premises of the Library the entire time.
  • Next to book borrowing places you will find a disinfection stand. We kindly ask to disinfect hands when you enter the Library.
  • Please observe coughing and sneezing etiquette.
  • Users experiencing the symptoms of the upper respiratory tract infections (fever, cough, difficulty breathing and others) are not allowed in the Library.
